There are basically two main types of chicken coups:- Portable or Permanent. The portable chicken coups can be moved around you garden to suit. They can be on wheels or sometimes have a light movable frame. Moving them around is great for soil renewal although some of the lighter models like chicken arks are not really predator safe. If you have a heavier coop you want to move around …you can attach wheels.
I prefer a more permanent structure because my chickens are then secure in bad weather and predator safe. You never really know what unexpected animal could seek out your chickens. I have unfortunately seen dogs and other predators come out of know where when least expected. So better to be safe than sorry.
What Does a Chicken Coups Require?
Most of us start with small chickencoups in the backyard to find our flock unexpectedly grows. That’s why it is always better to plan for a larger coup if possible. Chickens will die if they are too cold and damp. That is why so many opt for raised chicken coups. Also keeping the coup clean and dry is important and a raised coup can make this task really easy. Plus it also helps prevent any nasty diseases.
A constant supply of fresh air is important other wise ammonia fumes can build up. Ventilation is particularly important in the summer months. However in the winter your coup should not be draughty because..chickens will catch colds. If exposed to cold and damp together they can also die. So warmth in the winter is important. Sometimes light bulbs are used for warmth in the winter.
A big secret…for happy chickens..is too include perches in your coops as they love to perch on a roost, or climb around. It is there natural instinct and they feel much safer above ground level.Originating from the redjungle fowl or the greyjunglefowl, they essentially are a jungle bird. So providing lots of roosts in the form of branches or wooden dowls, will make your chickens happy. Also fresh clean water supply and keeping an eye out for diseases helps to keep a happy flock. Watch for any weight loss as this can indicate a form of mite. Check with your chicken pellet supplier there are remedies for this.
One nesting box per chicken makes a huge difference and will improve your egg production plus keep the chickens happy.
You want to keep there coup clean to keep away pests like rats and mice etc and this is most important in the city because sadly people will complain if they thing your chickens are attracting vermon.
Having removable feed trays is great because you can take them out for scrubbing. A hinged roof is a god send for cleaning etc and so is a raised chicken coup with side doors.
I recommend tried and true layout plans for you chicken coups.
